Oh Charlie!

Last night Charlie decided to run away. We came home from running errands and found Charlie's chain in the yard but no Charlie. Naturally we were pretty upset and went driving around the streets of Blackfoot until we were lost ourselves. I can't believe how attached a human can become to a dog. He's like our kid—or something. It's kind of ridiculous.
After a few hours it was so dark we finally gave up and decided to come home. We were so, so sad. A neighbor said they had seen a few other free-range dogs playing with him. We thought he had followed them home or was just lost somewhere—cold and hungry. But when we got out of the car there he was, running around in the yard. I've never been so happy to see him. I guess he found his own way home.

It made us feel good that he wanted to come home (even if the main motivation might have been for food). At least he knows where he lives. What a relief.

I'm glad he came home. There's a certain kind of pain from losing a pet. I hope it never happens to you again!
