To vaccinate, or not to vaccinate, that is the question.

Well, it's not too much of a question anymore. I just thought I'd throw this out there and see how all you moms feel about the issue. After much deliberation and research we decided to vaccinate Tristan. Which meant three big scary shots for Tristan and one gooey (probably grape flavored) juice drink ;( Sad Baby. Sad Mommy. We also had our first experience with Tylenol today. Yum. I don't think it was too bad and baby felt much better. The item on today's docket that disgusted me the most is the multivitamin we tried (were coerced into buying). Which resulted in Tristan GAGGING, for about 2 minutes (which is longer in baby time).

Apparently Vitamin D is not found in breast milk. So, I ask myself: if this one vitamin is not found in the food that is naturally designed for babies, do they really need it? I'd appreciate your thoughts.

If you'd like a more eloquent and detailed soliloquy on the subject, see what Lorenz has to say: http://lorenzschuerch.wordpress.com/

I laughed when I read your comment about always thinking you can hear him crying. Tyler used to tell me I was crazy because I could hear Jackson crying each time the heater kicked on, but it was just my imagination. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I still occassionally hear fake crying and find him fast asleep.

I have to agree with the theory that if a specific nutrient isn't found in a creature's natural God-given food source, then it probably isn't necessary.

After a lot of reading and worrying, we decided to vaccinate as well. The only thing I did "differently" is because Joci was 3 weeks early, I pushed her vaccination schedule back 3 weeks to correspond with her full-term due date rather than her birth date. Some studies show that some adverse side effects happen more in babies who are vaccinated to early. Don't know if it helped or not, but so far she's fine and healthy.

Ahh, all the stress of being completely responsible for another human.

That completely infuriates me! ( I just read Lorenz's post) I honestly would have told the Dr. that breastmilk is perfect for him, in every way. He is getting all of the nutrients he needs for development, at the proper times. If vitamin D is not found in breastmilk, maybe there is a reason it shouldn't be introduced until later. Maybe it is truly just not necessary. I do not know all the reasons, but I do know God is going to give his little ones what is absolutely best for their growth and development! Ugh! Sorry, I've dealt with Dr.'s too much in the past year (with my Father in the hospital--I went and stayed in the hospital for 5 weeks with him, and my Mother) and I have had to flat out tell them "how it is" ("My Father is dying, stop stalling!" which did, in fact, save his life!) so I have no tolerance for Dr.'s thinking they ALWAYS know best/ being too pushy. Phew! Sorry, little soapbox. :) Anyway, we went through with immunizing, as well. We considered doing a delayed schedule, but ended up feeling good about doing things "on time", at least for now. No concrete evidence to not to.

isn't vit. D gained from the sunlight? I know some people who chose to do an alternate vaccination schedule which means that they have given the vaccine over a period of time rather than a whole dose at once. I hear docs hate it, but they will do it if you insist.

we did the Vit. D until James was 4-6 months since he was born in the winter and we didn't want to go outside that much with him and get him sick.
The PA told it wasn't necessary after that age...

Vitamin D is gained from sunlight and it is necessary to bone growth. But if Tristan is growing well he obviously doesn't have a deficiency. If there is no deficiency why make him gag and scream to give him non needed gross drops?

Everything I have been told is that breastmilk has everything a baby needs, fats ,protein, vitmains etc. All the reading I have done, shows that vitamin D supplements are recommended for everyone of all ages because our bodies require more then what we get from our diet, or the sun. I did not give Lucas vitamins until he was on solids and no longer breastfeeding or on formula. If anything you could take a D supplement yourself since baby gets what he needs from you and it can deplete your stores. Good luck! I hope your enjoying mommydom. Its so much fun!
